1st Grade: Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance with Erik Abel

1st Grade: Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance with Erik Abel

Description of the Unit – Erik Abel is an American artist whose paintings express an appealing use of geometry and color, and, particularly in his abstracted paintings of animals, clearly express symmetry, asymmetry and balance in ways that are accessible to students as young as 1st grade. Students will observe and discuss his work, as well as other works of art that express the above terms and will then create their own Eric Abel-inspired animal illustration in oil pastel that express symmetry, asymmetry and balance.

6th Grade – Arabic Geometric ‘Tiles’

6th Grade – Arabic Geometric ‘Tiles’

Description of the Unit – Students will explore the centuries-old geometric patterns found in Islamic architecture. Students will use mathematical techniques as instructed in Eric Bourg’s marvelous book, Islamic Geometric Patterns, to re-create a variety of the patterns they have explored through their observations.

1st Grade – Pattern Collages

1st Grade – Pattern Collages

Description of the Unit –

Students will reinforce their understanding of patterns in art by creating collage patterns both individually and then in trios for a triptych of patterns.

Activity statement –

Pattern is one of the elements of the visual arts. It is represented as repetition, be it of a color, line, shape, symbol or combination of some or all of these. The repetition can serve to communicate a sense of balance, rhythm, harmony, movement and contrast in the artwork.
